Brother, William Bowen, 36 a Kansas truck driver, was attacked by two men,  stabbed to death and robbed in Albuquerque, NM,  August 13, 1993.  One suspect was arrested 8 months later, his bail  was reduced and then he was eliminated as a suspect through DNA.  In July 2008, Bowen's DNA which was in the state's database was linked to Robert Gomez  who was already serving a 5-1/2 year sentence. Gomez denied being involved but his DNA was a match.  In December 2010 Gomez pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and was sentenced to three years in prison. He had been in custody since 2008 so he needed to serve about a year.

Daughter, Kristie, 21, was stabbed to death by her girlfriend's former boyfriend, Jorge Contreras,  while Kristie was sleeping in her own home with her baby boy, May 16, 1998.  At the time of Kristie's murder,  her girlfriend was staying at a safe house . The killer had told people that he was going to go see his girlfriend and since she wasn't at Kristie's home where he thought she'd be staying, he killed Kristie instead.  The perpetrator was arrested shortly after, confessed and plea bargained to second degree murder.  He was sentenced to thirty years fixed, not counting appeals.  Kristie's little son was adopted by his grandparents.
